Binh Duong’s top 10 sports events of 2016

2016 was a good year for Binh Duong’s sports sector with numerous proud achievements. Here is the list of the 10 best Vietnamese sports events of the year selected by Binh Duong Newspaper.

1. Ly Hoang Nam ranks 615th in ATP world rankings

In 2016, Ly Hoang Nam took part in 9 Men’s Futures tennis tournaments in Binh Duong and many other international tournaments with high achievements, comprising of 1 championship title in the men’s single event and 2 championship titles in the men’s doubles event of Men’s Futures. With such achievements, as of late December 2016, he ranked 615th in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) word rankings, the highest a Vietnamese player has ever ranked.

 2. Binh Duong successfully hosts 9 Men’s Futures tennis tournaments

Binh Duong hosted the Men’s Future tennis series, Becamex Cup 2016 from July 25 to November 6, with the participation of 68 players from 41 countries and regions. Among the players, there were many ranking from 200th to 443rd in the word. Vietnam had 4 top players, namely Ly Hoang Nam, Nguyen Hoang Thien, Trịnh Linh Giang and Vu Artem.

The tournament, which includes nine small events (from F1 to F9), has a total prize of US$90,000. As a result, Binh Duong grasped 3 championship titles at the tournament. It is known that Men’s Futures is a series of professional tennis tournaments held around the world by the International Tennis Federation.

3. Binh Duong wins silver medal at world bodybuilding tournament for the first time

Lam Van Cuol of Binh Duong excellently won a silver medal in the men’s 100kg-weight bodybuilding event at the 2016 World Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships from November 19 to December 5, 2016 in Thailand. This is the first time Southeast Asian region in general and Vietnam in particular has had a bodybuilder to grasp a medal in the men’s 100kg-weight category. In 2015, Nguyen Van Kien of Binh Duong also won a gold medal in the men’s fitness event at the tournament.

4. Referee Nguyen Ngoc Chau wins the “Gold Whistle” title

Born in 1977, Nguyen Ngoc Chau has begun his career in 2000. With 8.44 points, he won the 2016 “Gold Whistle” title. This is also the first time Binh Duong has grasped the title. Chau is now Deputy Head of provincial Executive Board of Football Referees

5. Binh Duong’s male volleyball team under Binh Duong Building Materials Company has good performance and is ranked as strong team in 2017

The 2016 A-class National Volleyball Tournament absorbed 10 teams, including 10 female: Ha Noi, the Army Corps 4, Arirang-HCM city, Binh Duong, the Mobile Police. Binh Duong excellently defeated its rivals to enter the final round of the tournament with the Army Corps 4. Thus, according to the regulations of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation, the two teams have the right to become strong teams in 2017.

6. Lai Ly Huynh claims silver at  Han Xin cup 

Lai Ly Huynh of Binh Duong came second at the eighth Han Xin Cup Xiangqi (Chinese chess) International Masters 2017 in Sydney, Australia. He brought home a bonus of VND200million. This is the highest achievement of Vietnam in the history of the tournament.

7. Binh Duong has excellent performance at 5th Asian Beach Games

The fifth Asian Beach Games was held in Da Nang city from September 24 to October 2, 2016 with the participation of 4,600 athletes from 35 countries and territories.

These athletes competed in 14 events for 165 sets of medals. Vietnam had a total of 320 athletes at the sports festival. Athletes from Binh Duong had excellent performance and contributed 2 gold medals in bodybuilding, 1 silver in Muay Thai and 2 bronze medals in Mual Thai and Kurash to Vietnamese sports delegation at the sports festival. This contributed to help Vietnam defeat China, Japan, South Korea…to top the sports festival with 52 gold medals, 44 silver medals and 43 bronze medals.

8. Binh Duong hosts motor racing tournaments with global brand names for the first time

Binh Duong coordinated with units to organize 2 professional motor racing tournaments with the world’s strong brand names, comprising of Yamaha GP motor racing tournament and Binh Duong new city motor racing tournament-Motul Cup 2016. Noticeably, Yamaha GP tournament was held in Vietnam for the first time by Dai Nam racecourse and provincial Department for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Vietnam Motor-Bicycle Sports Federation and Yamaha Vietnam Company with automatic scoring and international standard safe systems.

9. Tran Pham Viet Thong wins gold medal at Southeast Asian Junior Karatedo Tournament for 3 consecutive years

Born in 1999, Tran Pham Viet Thong begun Karatedo training in 2008 and is now a member of Vietnam’s junior Karatedo team. In 2016, he successfully defended his gold medal at the 2016 Southeast Asian Junior Karatedo Tournament. This is the third consecutive year he has won the gold medal. He also won many other achievements such as gold medals at the 2016 Vietnam Open Karatedo Tournament, the 2016 National Tournament for Karatedo clubs…

10.  A successful year for Binh Duong’s junior and school football

In 2016, Binh Duong was top three localities with football players belonging to Vietnam’s junior football teams. There are now 5, 1 and 3 football players of Binh Duong called to the nation’s U15, U16 and U19 football teams, respectively in preparation for the final round of the 2017 world U19 football championships. As of late 2016, Binh Duong had a total of 15 young football players under 19 called to Becamex Binh Duong 1. The province’s U15 football team also won a gold medal at the football tournament of the 2016 National Phu Dong Sports Festival while bronze medal at the 2016 National Football Tournament for Teenagers went to the province’s U13 football team…
