At least two people were killed, 21 others injured and over 300 buildings damaged in an earthquake which hit Indonesia’s Central Java province on April 18, a disaster agency official has said.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the natural disaster management agency, said on April 19 that up to 316 houses, four mosques and two school buildings were devastated, while 2,104 people have fled home to evacuation centres.

Nearly 200 soldiers and rescue personnel are jointly undertaking relief efforts in the affected areas, he said.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.4 and a depth of 4 km, struck the province at 13:28 (local time) on April 18, according to the geophysics and meteorology agency.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes as the country lies at a vulnerable zone called the Pacific Ring of Fire.
