Myanmar and Russia signed a cooperative agreement in defence on January 20, as part of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu’s visit to Myanmar.

The pact was said to hold a significant meaning as Myanmar is working to develop and modernize its military forces. Through the agreement, Myanmar wanted to boost mutual defence cooperation, dialogues, policy understanding relating to regional and international security issues.

Prior to the signing ceremony, military officials from the sides discussed the increase of visit exchanges and joint works in training and technological development.

Russia and Myanmar established diplomatic relations in 1948. Myanmar is the first stop in Sergei Shoigu’s 3-day visit to the Southeast Asian region.
