General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong and his entourage arrived at Ferenc Liszt International Airport in Budapest in the afternoon of September 8, starting his official visit to Hungary at the invitation of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

An official welcome ceremony for him and the delegation was held at the airport.

Vietnam and Hungary established diplomatic relations on February 3, 1950. Hungary provided Vietnam with valuable support and assistance during the latter’s national defence and construction. Over the past years, bilateral relations have seen very positive developments, with the exchange of delegations, especially at the high level, taking place regularly through the channels of parties, administrations, national assemblies, and localities. The two sides also have had effective cooperation at multilateral forums, particularly at the United Nations and within the framework of the Asia – Europe Economic Forum.

Hungary takes Vietnam as its most important partner in Southeast Asia. The Hungary visit by the Party leader affirms Vietnam’s advocate of taking Hungary as a traditional partner of the top importance in Middle-eastern Europe, strengthens the mutual understanding and trust between the two countries’ leaders and peoples, creates a new landmark and motive, and brings the Vietnam – Hungary relations to a new height.

Under his schedule, during his stay in Hungary from September 8-11, Party leader Trong will hold talks and have meetings with leaders of the host country, witness the signing of many cooperation documents between the two countries, meet representatives of the Hungary – Vietnam Friendship Association, tour Szentendre city, deliver a speech at the second Vietnam – Hungary conference of rectors of universities, visit the Vietnamese embassy and talk with representatives of the Vietnamese community in the country.
