Q1-2021, number of nationwide traffic accidents decreases at two criteria

On April 9, National Traffic Safety Committee held an online conference in Hanoi to preliminarily review the work of traffic safety over the first quarter of 2021 and announce directions and tasks of Q2-2021. Permanent Deputy Prime Minister of the Government, Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee Truong Hoa Binh chairs the online conference. At Binh Duong endpoint, Nguyen Loc Ha, Member of Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of Provincial People's Committee, Deputy Head of Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, attended the online conference.

According to Khuat Viet Hung, Vice Chairman in charge of National Traffic Safety Committee, during the first quarter of 2021, the country had 3,206 traffic accidents, killing 1,672 people, injuring 2,386 people. Compared to the same period in 2020, the number of traffic accidents decreased by 7.58%, death toll increased by over 2%, the number of injured people decreased by more than 7%. In 30 provinces and cities, death toll caused by traffic accidents decreased compared to the same period in 2020; of which, 9 provinces and cities had decrease numbers by more than 30%. However, 30 provinces and cities still had increasing numbers of deaths by traffic accidents, of which 16 localities had increase levels by more than 30%, especially 5 provinces had increase levels by more than 70%.

Speaking at the conference, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh appreciated efforts of agencies, departments and branches in traffic safety and order guarantee in recent years. Nevertheless, he criticized the localities that had increasing numbers of deaths caused by traffic accidents.

The Permanent Deputy Prime Minister asked departments, branches and localities to be more drastic in implementing solutions to curb traffic accidents, focusing on controlling serious traffic accidents; reform propaganda about Law on Road Traffic, especially in schools to form a traffic culture for pupils; gradually reduce traffic accidents from 5 to 10% according to the set targets.
