Timor-Leste holds Presidential election

Update: 21-03-2017 | 15:58:31

Timor-Leste citizens cast their votes on March 20 to elect the country’s fourth president.

Among the eight candidates, the 62-year-old President of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent Timor Leste Francisco Guterres, is the most favourite. He failed the Presidential elections in 2007 and 2012.

Guterres’ main rival this year is Democratic Party politician Antonio da Conceicao, 52, who is holding two minister posts in the cabinet.

According to Timor-Leste Constitution, a candidate winning an absolute majority of the vote will become President for a five-year term. In case of no landslide victory, a runoff will be held for two candidates with the highest votes in the first round.

Timor-Leste was separated from Indonesia in 2002 after a referendum in 1999.-VNA
