Malaysia arrests more illegal foreign workers

More than 150 foreigners aged between 20-45, have been detained by the Malaysian Immigration Department for various offences including not having identification documents, possession of fake work permits and other offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 (revised in 2002).

The group of foreigners was arrested during an operation in a residential area in Kuala Lumpur, Deputy Director-General Jaafar Mohamed was quoted by the Vietnam News Agency reporters as saying on May 26.

According to the official, 120 members from the department were involved in the operation following reports from locals over a public disturbance in the area.

Several officers were injured during the raid because some of the foreigners acted aggressively.

Last week, the agency detained 125 illegal guest workers, including 20 women in the capital city’s downtown.

Those detained were from Indonesia, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Afghanistan, aged between 25-40.

Since early this year, Malaysia launched nearly 6,000 raids, examined 62,654 foreigners and arrested nearly 18,000 ones.
