Malaysian tourism expanding strongly

Malaysia welcomed 7.09 million foreign tourists in the first quarter of this year, a year-on-year hike of 10 percent, the country’s Tourism Promotion Board said on June 13.

The top 10 markets with a large number of tourists to Malaysia are Singapore, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Brunei, India, Australia, Japan, the Philippines and the UK.

ASEAN countries continued to make the largest contribution to the Malaysian tourism market, with 5.1 million visitors, equivalent to 72.1 percent of the total.

Among ASEAN countries, Vietnam posted the highest growth of 30.1 percent, followed by Thailand (20.9 percent), Cambodia (12.6 percent) and the Philippines (10.3 percent), the board said.

Malaysian tourism set a target this year of welcoming 28 million overseas tourists, earning 76 billion RM (22.99 billion USD), including 20 million visitors from ASEAN countries.

Last year, the country received 25.7 million foreign tourists and raked in 65.44 billion RM (20.33 billion USD).
