A reception was held in Hanoi on June 6 for a 22-member delegation from New Zealand’s Friendship Force of Christchurch.

At the event, Vice Chair of the Vietnam – US Friendship Association Bui The Giang briefed the guests, who aim to improve New Zealand’s diplomatic and cultural ties around the world, on Vietnam’s socio-economic development.

He also presented the role of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations in enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation between the Vietnamese people and those around the world.

Also at the reception, he updated the guests on China’s illegal placement of the oil rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

Leone Isabelle, head of the delegation, said their visit aims at learning more about Vietnam’s people, history and culture as well as local socio-economic development, helping foster the friendship between the two peoples.

She added that as a member of the New Zealand club, she will provide her fellows with information about the East Sea situation.

Earlier, the delegation had meetings with officials of the Unions of Friendship Organisations of Hanoi and Thua Thien-Hue.

The club, a member of Friendship Force International, will be in Vietnam until June 16.
