Colonel Pham Tho, former reporter of army television and the one directly recorded the tragic images at Bach Mai Hospital 40 years ago, recalled: “At that time, the morning of December 22, 1972, many co-workers of mine returned to this hospital to film the scene. It was horrible that day to witness dead people lying around. They must have been astounded by the attacks on the hospital – one of the two only emergency recuing places. We filmed the scene to evidence for the crimes against Hanoians.”
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Dinh Tho, 79, a living witness, said he would never forget those date. He led us to a monument under which was the place many bombs had been dropped 40 years ago.
Mr. Do Tho, former technician of Bach Mai Hospital said emotionally: “When the B52 bombs hit, everything was shaking. After the raids, I rode my bicycle down to the hospital to witness a tragic scene. My working place was totally collapsed. We had to clean up the place so that we could help the injured by the night.”

Remembering the days of tragedy, Professor Do Doan Dai put it that the US Army used to bomb Bach Mai Hospital in 1967 after which, the staff of Bach Mai Hospital was precautious to remove some of the equipment to Ung Hoa (formerly Ha Tay Province). In 1972, the US Army bombed Bach Mai Hospital up to 4 times, heaviest hit at 04:30:40 of December 22nd.
“We were hiding in a shelter of Kim Lien block very close to Bach Mai Hospital where I heard explosions and saw red flare. I knew the hospital was hit and took my bicycle back to the place after the strikes were over. Everything was destructed to the ground, the sounds, the cries for help were so terrifying. We had to operate power generators to support the patients. We even cooked meals for them and gathered everything necessary,” said Professor Do Doan Dai.
“When we were down to a collapsed shelter, we rescued Ms. Ninh, a venereal physician who kept shivering out of horror. We dug deeper inside and discovered a body clamped by the concrete block. We had to cut away the limbs and remove the concrete block to proceed with the rescue.
