80th INTERPOL General Assembly raises status of Vietnamese police

 For the first time, Hanoi will host the 80th General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) from October 31 to November 4, attended by 1,200 delegates, including senior police officials from 188 INTERPOL member countries. 

The meeting provides an opportunity for Vietnam to improve its efforts in joining other countries to prevent and combat transnational crimes.

Vietnam’s 20 years as an INTERPOL member

INTERPOL officially approved the application by the Vietnam Ministry of the Interior (now the Ministry of Public Security) to join the organization during the first session of its 60th General Assembly in Uruguay on November 4, 1991.

After approval, the Vietnamese police became the 156th member of INTERPOL, opening a broad mechanism for the country in multilateral cooperation for law enforcement.

The INTERPOL Vietnam Office was established on May 28, 1993 as part of the General Department of Police (now the General Department for Preventing and Combating Crimes).

Over the past two decades, the Vietnamese police have arrested and handed over more than 200 wanted persons to the US, the Republic of Korea, and Australia. They also joined hands with foreign police forces to capture and extradite 49 wanted persons to Vietnam.

The Vietnamese police investigated thousands of cases related to economic, drug, high-tech, environmental and terrorist crimes, which was highly appreciated by INTERPOL as well as police agencies in Southeast Asia.

80th INTERPOL General Assembly

This year's INTERPOL General Assembly is focused on ‘Connecting Police for a Safer World – Strong Partnerships, Innovation and Capacity Building’.

Officials and experts will discuss a wide range of issues at the event including assessing the implementation of resolutions on combating crime, exchanging experiences in preventing transnational crime, and setting orientations for INTERPOL’s future in line with globalization and international integration.

The General Assembly will also ratify important resolutions on police cooperation and elect the organization’s Executive Committee.

The 80th INTERPOL General Assembly will focus on six top priority fields to cope with the dynamic changes in the international environment and challenges to global security.
