The turtle, which weighs 85 kilos and is 85 cm long, is listed as a rare and endangered species by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), said head of the Department of Fisheries Resources Exploitation and Protection (Decafirep) Nguyen Quang Vinh Binh.
According to Binh, this is a Quan Dong sea turtle with the scientific name Cretta caretta, which lives primarily in the area between Bach Long Vy island and Cat Ba island in the northern port city of Hai Phong.
He added that CITES has banned hunting, trading, and transporting the rare species, including its eggs.
The fisherman who caught the turtle, Nguyen Thanh, released it back to the sea at 01.00pm of the same day.
