A disabled person with a beautiful heart

Update: 11-07-2023 | 11:31:58

In Quarter 1, My Phuoc Ward of Ben Cat Town, neighbors of Dang Thi Bich Sen talk about her as a rare, hard-to-find woman in everyday life. Ms. Dang Thi Bich Sen's habit of donating money to charity by a deduction from her monthly pensions has been maintained for more than a decade. On the 5th date of every month, people often see Ms. Tư Sen at the ward post office receiving her pension. Her pension is less than VND4 million, but every month she brings joy to unfortunate people...

To Dang Thi Bich Sen, giving is receiving.

Overcoming adversity

For a long time, the image of an old frail woman with no hands, white hair, but a strong passion about doing charity has left an impression on many people's hearts. Her passion for charity not only helps many unfortunate people reduce their pain in life, but also sows the seeds of kindness, drawing people closer to unfortunate lives... People in the local area call her by a familiar name: Tư Sen.

Ms. Sen was born and grew up in Ha Tay (now Hanoi). After the liberation of the South and reunification of the country, she went to Binh Duong, which is her husband's hometown, to live and reunite with her small family. She thought that her family life would be peaceful, but then a sudden accident struck in 1981. Explosions caused by landmines left her and her husband separated, her husband was gone forever, and she had her left arm amputated by shrapnel. More painful, she lost her baby in her belly when she was just a few months pregnant...

After the landmine accident, the woman became a disabled person. Looking at her three bewildered young children, not knowing who to rely on, she was awakened. From despair, she decided to find a better future for her children… On a rudimentary bicycle, she took her youngest child to Ben Cat Mechanical Engineering State-owned Enterprise to work with one arm. Compressing the pain in her heart, she encouraged herself to overcome difficulties, worked harder to earn money to raise her children, and at the same time be a solid support for her family.

She recounted: “Thanks to God, I was healthy and strong for all those years, still working and raising my three daughters, paying for their schooling. The children love their hard-working mother, understand the family situation, so they are very obedient and study hard."

Her heart is like a lotus

Dang Thi Bich Sen's habit of doing charity by deducting her monthly pension has been maintained for more than a decade, since her children settled down and had their own family. Having just received her pension out of the post office, in no hurry to go home, Ms. Sen walked to a nearby grocery store to buy 3 boxes of cookies, 5 boxes of instant noodles, and a few cartons of milk and then took a motorbike taxi to Chanh Phu Hoa Sponsor Center (Ben Cat Town) to give to the lonely elderly here.

The image of a motorbike taxi driver carrying a gray-haired woman with a lot of cookies and milk to social protection centers is too familiar to many people here. Because regularly, she does this once a month. Next month, she will go to Social Protection Center (An Son commune, Thuan An city), and then month, she will visit children at Social Protection Center for orphans and disabled children (My Phuoc ward, Ben Cat Town)…

Whoops of joy "Grandma Sen has returned" along with bright smiles on orphans’ faces imply that, although their lives are unhappy, they still have joys and happiness when a 74-year-old grandmother brought love to them. “Watching children suffer losses, I feel heartbroken. I really want to do something to help unfortunate people, especially children,” said Ms. Dang Thi Bich Sen.

As being asked: "You gave all your money away, don't you think to save money in case of illness?". Ms. Dang Thi Bich Sen said: "I can't bear to see people suffering so much!" At the time when prices were escalating, everything was expensive, but Ms. Sen still smiled confidently: “I have vegetables in my garden, my children also often buy food for me. What's the point of spending VND1 million every month doing charity?"

In an old but quite spacious house, she lives alone. Furniture in the house is neatly arranged. She excitedly talked about her grown-up children: “This bookcase belongs to my daughters. Whenever I have free time, I read a book." Turning the pages of the book, she read me a few lines without glasses. Life took her an arm, but in return for her eyes, the eyes of the 70-year-old grandmother are still sharp and clear.

Through stories told by neighbors, we also know that her charitable footprints have traveled throughout this area. On big holidays, she often buys fruits and cookies to give to children of workers who are staying in this area. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu Hoa, a resident of Quarter 1, My Phuoc Ward, said: “Ms. Sen is old but has a philanthropic heart, everyone respects her. She often uses her pension to buy gifts and sweets for social protection beneficiaries. Silently, she volunteers to do small but warm things. We see it as something to learn and do so that everyone can have a better life.”

At Chanh Phu Hoa Protection Center, after asking about their health and giving gifts to the elderly here, Ms. Sen folded her half-empty hands and said goodbye to her friends here. Simultaneous applause from the old people here as a sincere thank and cheering to Ms. Tư Sen’s heart.

Having received a gift, Mr. Tran Van Cu mentioned Ms. Sen with emotion: "Ms. Sen is so kind, from time to time we receive gifts from this woman and find some comfort." Ms. Sen added: “A handful when hungry, equal to a packet when full. My life has also suffered loss and pain, so I sympathize with them. I just wanted to share a little bit of my heart…”

Helping and sharing with difficult situations makes Ms. Sen feel happy and believe in life. The tolerance of a woman who has gone through loss and pain with the mindset of "giving is getting back" has made us believe that good people are still around. In life, there are always beautiful souls and kind deeds. Ms. Tư Sen has contributed beautiful deeds to this life, making people's hearts warm in a busy daily life...
