Attending “Forum of Thuan An town children 2013”, we were so touched as listening thoughts from Bui Thi Thuy Duong, a good pupil of grade 8A11, Trinh Hoai Duc secondary school, suffering from Thalassaemia disease. From the first days of life ...The little girl lives at An Quoi hamlet, An Son commune, Thuan An town. Her mother, Ms. Vo Thi Hanh, said, when Duong was born, she has normal health condition like other children. But since the 7th month, Thalassaemia disease started to affect Duong, causing fevers, darker skin. The illness became more dangerous since the 13th month. Doctors diagnosed her illness as Thalassaemia having no known cure, and said that she had to do blood transfusion until the end of life and it was easy to have sudden death.  Ms. Hanh only needed to see her child's smile so that all her tiredness will disappearAlthough her mother is a tailor, her father is a bricklayer, with their love, they have moved heaven and earth by themselves to take her daughter to Blood transfusion and hematology center of Cho Ray hospital for treatment for 14 years.14 years of fighting for life…14 years is a long time period, but Duong’s parents have been overcoming to cure their daughter. “It was happy as giving birth to my child, and when she was ill, we love her more and more. We cannot leave her alone”, said Ms. Hanh with tears. The amount of blood transfused has increased over time, from 250ml at the beginning to 2,500ml now. Currently, her skin turns darker, her nose changes its shape, stomach swells… In addition to enduring personality change after each transfusion, she has to take many medicines everyday. The mother said: “Doctors said, her illness is now in highest stage, blood transfusion is only to prolong her life, spinal cord surgery costs over VND1 bln but probability of success is only 1%”.The family has sold all properties for Duong’s illness. The old house was destroyed by the storm in 2012, the amount of money given by Duong’s grandparents for constructing a new house is used up. Therefore, they have to live with relatives. Duong’s parents wish, they could have money to prolong her daughter’s life. “Whenever doing blood transfusion, Duong said, father and mother do not give any more transfusion, because it was so expensive. I was so sad and has tried more to fight for her life”, said Ms. Hanh.Reported by Hoang Pham – Translated by Ngoc Huynh
