The Second ASEAN Human Resources Conference entitled ‘Human resources for economic recovery and sustainable development’ started in Hanoi on May 25 as part of the 21st ASEAN Labour Ministers’ Meeting.
The conference highlights the importance of medium- and long-term solutions to improve the quality of workforces by introducing better and more suitable educational and training programmes. Participants in the event work on measures to build up a workforce that meet the market’s demand.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung stressed that developing human resources plays a crucial role in increasing productivity, boosting growth and improving people’s living standards. This is achieved via education and technical and vocational training, he said. “This is now an urgent issue as the labour market has been affected by the global economic crisis.”
Mr Hung said that Vietnam, which is striving to become an industrial country by 2020, has paid a lot of attention to human resource development, issuing many new strategies and policies, and conducting a wide range of projects to develop education and vocational training. To achieve this end, the country has also strengthened cooperation with ASEAN countries and other countries around the world, he said.
Sachiko Yamamoto, ILO (International Labour Organization) Director for the Asia-Pacific region, told the conference that balanced and practical policies are needed to help with sustainability in terms of economy, society, the environment and jobs.
