Phnom Penh City Hall has decided not to allow the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) hold a people's congress at Freedom Park in Phnom Penh on March 30.

According to Long Dimanche, spokesman for Phnom Penh City Hall, the Phnom Penh Municipality made the decision because the park is still under the court's investigation process relevant to violent cases on January 2 and 3.

However, the CNRP stated that it will still hold the gathering, adding that it is not a demonstration to topple the government.

The day before, the CNRP submitted a request to Phnom Penh City Hall to hold the event.

CNRP President Sam Rainsy said the congress aims to meet its supporters to hear their recommendations about how to respond to the ongoing political dispute between the CNRP and Hun Sen’s Cambodian People's Party (CPP).

A dispute between the two parties has simmered since election results last July showed that the CPP won 68 out of a total 123 parliamentary seats against the 55 seats taken by the CNRP.

The CNRP refused to accept the outcome and has boycotted the par-VNAiament and conducted numerous protests demanding the resignation of Hun Sen and a re-election.
