A national flag-hoisting ceremony was officially held on September 20, 1977, at the UN headquarters to mark the country’s role as the 149th member of the global organisation.

During the past 45 years, the nation’s presence and contributions to the common goals of the UN and its mechanisms have become increasingly clear and effective, receiving great appreciation from the wider international community.

As part of this occasion, a VOV report held an exchange with Ambassador Giang to discuss the country’s role and contributions to the global body.

Vietnam has twice participated in the UN Security Council and fulfilled its various responsibilities as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

The nation has also twice served as Vice President of the UN General Assembly, twice as a member of the International Law Commission, as a member of the Human Rights Council and the Executive Council of UNESCO, and has joined in many other mechanisms.

Vietnamese contributions to these mechanisms clearly demonstrate an active, proactive, and responsible nation to the international community. The country has been able to devise a range of effective initiatives on how it can contribute to the UN's common agenda for the cause of peace, security, and development, Ambassador Giang said.

“I believe that in the coming time, with the background of experience and contributions made in the past time and with the trust and confidence of the international community, Vietnam can completely make more substantive contributions to the common work of the UN as well as the international community for a world of peace, stability and development and for the benefit of all people,” the Vietnamese diplomat went on to say.

Regarding the nation's important contributions to the common work of the UN, especially through its involvement in policy making and implementing its commitments, the Vietnamese diplomat said that over the past 45 years, the country has always made efforts to cultivate and build an effective with the UN.

In terms of policy making, immediately after joining the UN the country participated in activities to promote and enhance the role of the UN by engaging in the development of international law and regulations. This is along with regulating relations between countries and becoming more deeply involved in negotiations and the building of key international treaties of the UN such as the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and conventions on human rights and disarmament.

It also participated in the formulation of policies and major orientations of the UN in development issues such as the Millennium Development Goals programme, and more recently the Sustainable Development Goals programme and the 2030 agenda.

According to Ambassador Giang, in the process of participating in UN mechanisms, the country has also promoted many important resolutions and statements of the UN Security Council, the UN General Assembly, the Human Rights Council, with these resolutions and documents being approved by the UN Security Council. Through these actions, the country is highly appreciated and supported by the wider international community.

Vietnam has always strictly observed its international commitments, those within the UN framework, and has always strived to uphold the strict observance and implementation of the UN Charter and international law.

“The nation also promotes, builds and implements UN initiatives. For millennium development goals, we have completed these goals ahead of time and are now carrying out sustainable development goals,” said the Vietnamese diplomat.

In terms of actual implementation of its commitments, the country always strictly implements international commitments and those made by Vietnam within the UN framework, whilst seeking to always upholds compliance and strictly adhere to the UN Charter and international law.

The nation has deployed forces to participate in UN peacekeeping in different regions globally, thereby clearly showing that it not only contributes on the common work of the UN in words, but also through concrete actions.

Evaluating the country’s contributions to UN peacekeeping mission, Ambassador Giang said that joining the UN peacekeeping force is a very important policy of the Party and State in order to implement the external policy of diversification whilst being an active and responsible member of the wider international community.

Peace, stability, and development today are interdependent and closely linked, therefore contributing to maintaining peace, stability, and development for other countries, thereby providing more defence for the country, he stated.

Concerning Vietnamese contributions to this organisation, Ambassador Giang said participation in the UN Human Rights Council clearly demonstrates the nation’s ability to provide to this mechanism.
