East Sea situation discussed at European Parliament

Update: 12-06-2015 | 17:34:12

The European Parliament Delegation for Relations with the Countries of Southeast Asia and the ASEAN held a talk in Strasbourg, France on June 10 with ASEAN ambassadors and chiefs of diplomatic missions to discuss EU-ASEAN relations as well as regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Ambassador Vuong Thua Phong, Head of the Vietnam Delegation to the EU, attended the event.

Mentioning recent developments in the East Sea, participants expressed concern over tensions regarding China’s unilateral actions of expanding the construction of reef islands in the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, which is to change the status quo there.

European parliamentarians emphasised the importance of ensuring maritime security, safety and freedom in the East Sea, wishing the parties involved would respond on the basis of international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

They also urged ASEAN and China to establish a Code of Conduct in the East Sea to ensure peace, security and stability in the region.
