Effective model of pomelo planting

Update: 12-09-2013 | 00:00:00
With only 120 pomelo trees, Mr. Do Duy Chien living at hamlet 1, Tan My commune, Tan Uyen district can earn hundreds of VND millions each year, and is be able to take good care of his family’s life.  Due to accumulated experiences, pomelo garden of Mr. Chien generates stable productivityBettering due to pomeloAfter demobilization, Mr. Do Duy Chien traveled from Ha Noi to Tan My for settlement. In 1999, he purchased 4 acres of land with his small saving, but the land was so bad that he could not plant beans or rice. Then he noticed that pomelo always had stable output in the market, so he decided to grow pomelo. Thanks to his determination, he was successful in growing 120 trees of both green-skin pomelo and orange-leaf sweet pomelo on 3 acres of land, the remainder was for house building. He also grew peanuts between pomelo rows to have temporary income.2 years later, the first pomelo crop generated revenue of VND20 mln, which confirmed his decision for pomelo. Then he attempted to learn experiences from documents, attended training, workshops to improve efficiency of his pomelo garden. However, he said, experiences learning was just for reference, we had to find themselves a proper way as applying. He also devised a method to make pomelo trees have out-of-season fruits so that he could sell on Tet holidays for higher prices.“During the first 6 months, we need to increase protein amount for trees to have leaves, and water regularly; stop watering when we want trees to flower; pluck leaves for well-developing trees; water again after flowering 2 weeks…”, Mr. Chien shared his experiences. His pomelo garden always yields high income; sometimes it can give total revenue of VND400 mln per crop.Creating with wine-gourd-shaped pomeloIn 2011, Mr.Chien started to produce wine-gourd-shaped pomelo with his own way. One year later, after 4-5 failures, he could produce wine-gourd-shaped pomelo to sell on Tet holidays with the price of VND350,000/ pair. He said: “The most important phase is creating pattern. At first, my pattern was so thin, thus created pomelo was not beautiful. Now, after being successful in pattern creating, I found that producing wine-gourd-shaped pomelo was not so difficult”. At the present, he offers standardized plastic patterns for sale with a relative low price of VND40,000 each one. When a young pomelo fruit has a diameter of about 5.5 – 6 cm, he uses nylon wire to tighten the fruit to create its “waist”. After one week, he unfastens the wire and cover the upper part of the fruit with pattern. Each side of the pattern he carves two words “Tai” and “Loc”. 15 days before harvesting, he unleashes the pattern to expose the fruit to the sun and glues paper on the words for a beautiful and long lasting color”.“Thanks to pomelo, I can get a fixed income and take good care of my family’s life. Pomelo is not so difficult to grow but yields high revenue. I am willing to share my experiences so that every one can succeed in planting this tree”, Mr. Chien said.Reported by Cao Son – Translated by Ngoc Huynh
