Enjoying green space at Phu An Bamboo Village

Bamboo has long been a familiar image of Vietnamese villages, appearing in many literary works. The image of bamboo is indomitable and proud as courageous Vietnamese people who never bow to the enemy. And when coming to Phu An Bamboo Village in Ben Cat town’s Phu An commune, visitors have a lot of excitement to explore, experience with the image of large bamboo bushes, with trees soaring up to 20meters and green color filling the space.

Phu An Bamboo Village is a project of ecological conservation of bamboo genetic resources and vegetation along the Saigon River of Binh Duong province and the Southeastern region. This project was formed from the scientific idea of ​​Dr. Diep Thi My Hanh, lecturer at the University of Natural Sciences under Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh city since 1999. After more than 20 years of ups and downs, Phu An Bamboo Village has really become an ideal destination, contributing to educating love of nature and protection of the ecological environment among human beings, especially youth and children.

Phu An Bamboo Village is divided into two separate areas, including the bamboo museum and the research area. Currently, it has about 1,500 bamboo bushes with more than 300 forms of bamboo belonging to 17 varieties, accounting for nearly 90% of bamboo varieties in Vietnam. Therefore, this place is also directly supporting scientists and student groups to carry out research and conservation of bamboo genetic resources and vegetation system along the Saigon River. With contributions by teachers, experts, scientists and generations of students, Phu An Bamboo Village is currently an ideal destination for an ecological garden model. In addition, this is also the place where many important events of Vietnam and the world have taken place. The 4th World Bamboo Conference was organized here in 2022.

At the seminar, leading experts from Vietnam and the world presented thematic reports pertaining to bamboo, including introduction about Vietnam’s bamboo species; bamboo breeding and conservation solutions from the world’s experience; production of handicraft products from bamboo by advanced techniques; the role and application of bamboo in architecture and construction; localities’ strategies of greening bare land and bare hills with bamboo trees to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; new and advanced materials from bamboo and bamboo fibers in the process of replacing traditional wood materials.
