Enrichment by bean sprouting growing

Update: 03-08-2013 | 00:00:00
Over 10 years of bean sprouting growing has helped Huynh Van Khai living at quarter 6, Phu My ward, TDM City to be able to take good care of his family. Mr. Hai was beside his sprouting farm Being a pioneer Khai was born in Ben Tre, but moved to Binh Duong province in 1998 in order to start a new life, new agriculture model. Initially, he grew crickets, following the tendency at that time. To have enough food for his crickets, he had to buy vegetables at markets, but this destroyed gradually these crickets. Thus he decided to plant vegetables himself. Thanks to reading a newspaper’s article, he found out that sprouting planting was not so hard, had high income, and could provide clean vegetables for society; hence he determined to grow bean sproutings. In 2001, he embarked on his sprouting growing model. As a pioneer of this model in BD, he did not have many reference documents or consultants. Nevertheless, he built up a sprouting farm, and accepted initial losses to have experiences. He designed himself farm, shelves, trays, planting boxes, wrapping papers… He also realized that coir was a good substrate for sprouting. Then he came back to his hometown to buy more coir and processed it. It took a pretty long time finish the process. He knew he could be successful, because this is the hardest step. Now he still remembers clearly the moment as his first sprouting started to grow up, although it was not so good. “I was so happy at that time, because I knew, this is a right way for me”. Still have concerns According to Hai, the most effective seed is imported from New Zealand. Sprouting growing is not quite difficult, if we pay attention to processes. This is a short-day plant can be harvested after 5 days, thus it does not have time for pests to develop. Used substrate must be disposed and replaced by a new one. However, this is a sensitive plant, spreading speed is high, thus it is easy to have crop failure. Bean sprouting depends on substrate but especially and mainly water. But it could be damaged, if we water it too much and directly on plants. Firstly, the consumption of this new vegetable was not high. Nevertheless, he expanded his business scale and founded Khai Yen vegetable branch name. In 2007, Khai Yen bean sprouting’s sales was stable with quantity of 300 – 400 boxes per day. Currently, his business supplies averagely 800 – 1,000 boxes per day, each box weighs 150g and also creates jobs for 6 labors with monthly income of about VND4.5 mln. Annual net profit of his model is about VND500 mln, which helps him to take good care of his family. Nonetheless, he still has many concerns. He said: “Consumption still depends on traders, I cannot distributed directly to supermarkets. Traders remove all label, logo and contact information of my business. Therefore, mostly customers do not know about my brand name”. He hopes that authorities can improve this situation so that he can legitimately offer his products more closely to customers.
