Farm economy and efficiency from characteristic products in North Tan Uyen district

In North Tan Uyen district, the farm economy contributes significantly to the agricultural and rural economy, and solving jobs for workers. The implementation of the Program “One Commune One Product” (OCOP) at farms has improved the quality of products, effectively implemented the criteria for building new rural areas.

Green-skin pomelo of Doan Minh Chien Farm is recognized to be three-star OCOP product at the provincial level and has its trademark.

To utilize potential and advantages

To take advantage of climate and soil, people of communes along the Dong Nai and Be Rivers in North Tan Uyen District have actively transformed the structure of crops and livestock, making the farm economy generate high economic efficiency. In particular, the development of citrus fruit areas concentrated in some communes, such as Hieu Liem, Tan Dinh, Tan My, Chang Tan, and Lac An, has made North Tan Uyen become the largest concentrated production area of citrus fruit trees in the province.

Hieu Liem commune is the largest total area of citrus fruit trees in the district, has nearly 1,465 hectares and 48 active farms. Mai Duc Quy, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said that the farm economy is the highlights of the commune’s economic development today. In order for this model to develop and gain efficiency, the commune has coordinated with the district's administration to encourage people to boost production, transform crop structures, open training courses on science and technology transfer. Up to now, there are 20 citrus fruit farms with granted VietGAP certificates, 41/48 farms received food safety certificates. The Commune People's Committee regularly cooperates with Farmers' Union to organize for members annually registering their commitments to production and consumption of safe agricultural products.

In order to improve the quality of key products, localities in the district have implemented the OCOP program, integrated the OCOP program into resolutions and action programs of local Party committees and authorities to direct the regular implementation.

Product quality enhancement

The district has now 102 farms, of which more than 250 hectares of production area meets VietGAP and organic standards. The district has made great efforts in promoting the role of the authorities and socio-political organizations in the implementation of the OCOP program. Especially as an organization representing farmers who directly involved in the production of OCOP products, all levels of district Farmers' Union have implemented and expanded this program, connected banks with hundreds of farmers, intensified the communication about OCOP.

With good solutions, in the past year, the district had three farms that were recognized to have three-star OCOP products at the provincial level. Specifically, the green-skin pomelo of Doan Minh Chien Farm (Vuon Uom hamlet, Tan Dinh commune), orange of Lam Thanh Thanh Farm (Cay Dung hamlet, Hieu Liem commune), orange products of Viet Thai Farm (Cay Dau hamlet, Hieu Liem commune).

In order to improve the quality of products, for a clean agriculture, the production of green-skin pomelo of Doan Minh Chien Farm employs modern technology meeting VietGAP standards, guaranteeing food hygiene and safety. Over several years of construction and development, it has become one of the major farms of the province in terms of business scale and revenue. Green-skin pomelo of this farm took part in OCOP program and met the three-star standards, and has proved its high quality and investment efficiency.

Localities and production establishments meeting OCOP standards will gain many advantages. "With 20 hectares of “cam sành” (terracotta orange), each crop on average generates about 40 tons, 5 hectares were recognized as three-star OCOP products. After the product met three-star OCOP standards at the provincial level, many people know about my farm, the reputation increase facilitates well the consumption", said Lam Thanh Thanh, owner of Lam Thanh Thanh Farm. The OCOP program has contributed to changing outdated farming practices, converting to the market economy. The most important thing is to create products that meet high quality standards, distributed well in the market.

Huynh Huu Tan, Deputy Director of of North Tan Uyen District Agricultural Service Center, said that in the district had many farmers owning experience and potential to develop OCOP products. In fact, OCOP product samples will go through many evaluation agencies. After achieving the number of stars, OCOP products will be placed under the management of the provincial OCOP agency; then not only the quality but also the appearance of the products will receive careful investment.
