Farmer gets rich thanks to flexibility

Update: 23-07-2011 | 00:00:00

Because of poverty, Huynh Van Khai, born in 1976, and his family decided to leave their Ben Tre homeland for TDM town’s Phu My ward in Binh Duong to set themselves up in business in 2004. Thanks to diligence and flexibility, he and his family have so far gained success in business.

Realizing that the model of growing rau mam (sprouting) vegetables in home brings hi-economic efficiency while there is a short time for harvest. Since 2005, Huynh Van Khai has officially changed to developing this model.

Currently, he harvests around 300 boxes of sprouting vegetables per day. Each box is about 150 gram with the average price of VND40,000 per kg. His sprouting vegetables have been registered with the exclusive trademark “Khai Yen”.

He said that his sprouting vegetable products are mainly sold at wholesale markets. His current desire is that his sprouting vegetable products will be sold at province-based supermarkets. He also hopes to receive the support from provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development so that his sprouting vegetable products will be consumed across the province…

In addition to the model of planting sprouting vegetables, Khai has got involved in raising porcupines and chickens in garden. He has spent VND160mln on buying 4 pairs of breeding porcupines.

Khai said: “By the end of the year, these breeding porcupines will begin their reproductive period with the average number of 2 or 3 baby porcupines for each batch. After one month, they will be sold at VND15-VND20mln per pair…”. He now intends to expand this breeding model.

Besides, he has developed 300 chickens raised in his garden and this figure will amount to 3,000 in the coming time. It is estimated that he will sold 6 tons of chickens per year.

With the above models, the total annual income of Khai and his family is very great. But, good farmers like Khai need to receive more support from the local authorities for better development, contributing to building the new countryside.
