Free milk for children in need

Update: 12-07-2013 | 00:00:00
Around 300 children from poor and underprivileged families in the central province of Quang Binh received free milk from the Vietnam Rising Milk Fund in 2013.

The 26,000 glasses of milk delivered to Quang Binh is only the first stop for the Milk Fund, with events scheduled this summer in the northern Yen Bai province and on the southern Phu Quoc island district.

The fund plans to provide free milk to 13,348 underprivileged children living in 223 children’s homes located in 58 provinces and cities nationwide.

Supported by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, the Vietnam Children Sponsoring Fund, and the Vietnam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (Vinamilk), the fund is in its fifth year of operation.

In that time, it has donated over 20 million glasses of milk to nearly 300,000 poor children nationwide, a contribution valued at around VND75 billion.

One in every three Vietnamese children under five suffers stunted growth. Insufficient consumption of milk is regarded as a key reason for the high incidence of malnutrition, according to a recent official report.
