Green production, adapting to grow

Update: 18-07-2023 | 11:00:43

Currently, many firms in Binh Duong have been taking "green" production as a strategy and competitive advantage. Accordingly, firms continuously innovate, accelerate business model transformation, combined with sustainable and environmentally friendly development.

Many firms in Binh Duong are actively using clean energy, in addition to solutions to save electricity and water in their production process.

An inevitable path

"Greening" production is a global trend that businesses must implement to achieve sustainable development goals. Pham Ngoc Thuan, General Director of Becamex IDC, said that the green economy is also the driving force to maintain growth and attract investment. In the current period, market demand increasingly poses new challenges for businesses, such as production cost efficiency, social responsibility and decarbonization goals. Carbon tax policies and transboundary carbon regulation mechanisms such as the European Green Agreement or other similar mechanisms around the world are also having a great influence on FDI attraction in many countries.

Investors themselves, especially FDI firms, must meet stricter requirements for clean products (from raw materials to production and supply stages) and have clear origins to be accepted into the global value chain and increase competitive advantage. The move towards green production has become an inevitable trend and is considered a link in the green growth strategy. Participating in the green production campaign, in recent years, many firms in Binh Duong have been using natural materials, fuels and non-toxic chemicals; investing in modern machinery, technology and production equipment according to international standards to improve the process.

One of the pioneering firms, with many practical actions to contribute to the implementation of green growth in the province, is Tetra Pak Factory in Binh Duong. At the beginning of 2023, Tetra Pak became the first and only factory among 82 packaging factories in Vietnam to be ranked with AA+ BRCGS certification, the highest level according to the quality management system established by the UK Retail Association. Eliseo Barcas, General Director of Tetra Pak Vietnam, said that Tetra Pak is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its operations to zero by 2030. Tetra Pak's beverage box factory in Binh Duong has just completed the installation of solar panels on an area of nearly 5,900m2 after six months of construction. These solar panels can generate nearly 1,900 MWh of renewable electricity per year, helping to reduce more than 700 tons of CO2 emissions into the environment. This is a result of Tetra Pak's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across all of Tetra Pak's businesses.

Decide to change

In fact, many businesses in Binh Duong have been taking "green" production as a strategy and competitive advantage, from using clean energy, environmentally friendly materials, and supporting social responsibility activities, to seriously invest in modern, high-tech production lines that use less resources and energy, reduce waste and emissions...

According to Masami Okumura, General Director of Toyotsu Safety Co., Ltd & Automotive Components Vietnam (TSAV) in My Phuoc 3 Industrial Park, this company of Toyota Group, is currently producing car seat accessories, consuming a lot of electricity and diesel. In order to actively use clean energy, in addition to solutions to save electricity and water in the production process, the company installed a quality management system, safety and hygiene, a waste treatment system, etc. In 2022, the company also installed a new boiler to reduce diesel fuel consumption by 15%, and installed rooftop solar power at the plant. Currently, TSAV still maintains the strategy of environmental protection in the factory through activities, such as advocacy of reducing CO2 emissions, monitoring wastewater quality, reducing water use, reducing emissions, transparent environmental information, encouraging staff to develop projects on saving electricity, water, reducing waste and recycling with many practical improvement ideas...

For Binh Duong, green economic development is also the driving force to maintain growth and attract investment. In the coming time, the province will continue to facilitate the development of a green and sustainable economy, creating a driving force to attract new investment capital flows, especially the province focuses on attracting FDI inflows for green growth.

Recently, as discussing with provincial leaders about continuing to pour more than 250 million USD into Binh Duong, Yeh Ming Yuh, CEO of Polytex Far Eastern (Vietnam) Co., Ltd., said that to advocate green transformation in production, along with expanding production lines with ultra-durable yarn products, the company will also build a solar power plant next to it to provide electricity for its operations. Polytex Far Eastern Company is committed to investing in Binh Duong towards green transformation, sustainable development, training high-quality human resources, joining hands with Binh Duong in enhancing social responsibility to protect the environment and workers.

Although the green economy development of the province is only at the beginning stage, many challenges hinder both localities and businesses, setting green growth goals early will help Binh Duong continue to orient good directions in attracting investment as well as supporting and monitoring the effectiveness of business activities. Along with that, businesses will develop sustainably, gain more trust and respect. (Mai Hùng Dũng, Permanent Vice Chairman of Provincial People's Committee)
