Hackathon and the opportunity for starting a smart city

As an acitivity in 2017 Binh Duong Smart City Conference, Hackathon Binh Duong 2017 was a programming contest for young people who have technological ideas, created useful products to improve people's lives. The Hackathon competition was the beginning of Binh Duong to attract many talented young people; create opportunities for creative young people.

In the socio-economic development strategy towards Binh Duong Smart City, scientific research and technological development is an important step in the process of industrialization, modernization and international economic integration; is an important foundation to bring practical benefits to people and businesses. Experts said that the development of technology, the creation of new products, especially superior technology solutions with high applicability to serve smart city was extremely necessary; thereby contributing to active support for local economic development coupled with effective control of negative impacts from urbanization; At the same time, we aim to build a worth-living and sustainable city.

Hackathon Binh Duong 2017 was a programming contest for young people who have technological ideas, initiatives and creativity that could improve life quality of the people in areas such as transport, culture, tourism, environment, services, information, citizens, health and education.

The competition attracted 72 teams with more than 300 contestants from technology companies, startup groups, and university students across the country. After 24 hours of continuous work, the teams submitted their entries to the jury. The scoring of ideas was based on criteria including creativity, functionality, feasibility and community. Through many reviews, assessments and discussions, the jury selected five winners of the competition and four teams won the IBM technology award. The championships belonged to VGU.EEIT team (Viet Duc University) with the idea of ​​building a solar-powered sensor network, which aimed to study the environment, help people access the environmental database to offer the best solution for every single purpose.

Huynh Anh Tuan, Director of the provincial Center for Technology, Information and Communication, said that as a jury of the contest, he found that contestants were very enthusiastic and always tried their best for the contest. Programmers have to be creative, but in just 24 hours they had very unique ideas, potential solutions.

Dinh Buu Son, a member of VGU.EEIT, said, “All members of my team thought about the environment. We were not born and grew up in Binh Duong. But after four years of learning and living in Binh Duong, we realized, Binh Duong is developing, espcially while building smart city, environmental issues should concerned and becomes a matter of urgency. Therefore, the team decided to choose this topic. We hope that our ideas could contribute to the construction of Binh Duong Smart City.

The way to start a business

The Hackathon Binh Duong 2017 contest was an exciting and challenging experience for young people, who aspire to find and build a more modern and comprehensive life. To get creative programs, they not only had the acumen, unique ideas but also tried to overcome challenges.

Son said: "When we started the sensor, the team encountered difficulties, because the product must meet criteria of the organizers. That is to say, the idea of ​​building a cost-effective sensor network must be affordable to users; the environment must be consistent with cloud computing; appropriate technology, short time but the user record high efficiency; wireless sensor model. However, owing to the team spirit, all members worked together for new ideas and finished all tasks”

According to Mr. Tuan, their team spirit was very well. Although the results achieved were not really excellent, the approach, implementation of issues was very specific, such as traffic jams, environmental problems, health... The winning teams’ idea will be ordered by the PPC and put into practice.

Talking about startup, Son said this year his friend and he would graduate. With the Hackathon award, they wanted their idea of ​​building a solar-powered network would be further developed. Son hoped that this idea would become their start-up path, contribute to the process of building a smart city of Binh Duong.

Hackathon Binh Duong 2017 has just ended. This was the starting point for the process of attracting and retraining human resources - the most important factor in the provincial strategy of building a smart city.
