“Hands-on” is an educational method that directly involves the learners to encourage their sense of initiative. Learners experience to solve problems and draw conclusion themselves. Since 2012-2013 academic year, Ministry of Education – Training has exerted Hands-on learning in elementary schools. In Binh Duong province, Dinh Hoa primary school in Thu Dau Mot City was chosen to test this learning method.  Pupil groups conducted experiments to answered their own questionsWe were lucky to attend a 5th-grade science class taught by Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tuyen on October 24th. She chose hands-on method to teach her “Limestone” lesson to pupils. She prepared a few samples of limestone, pebbles, dilute acid; pupils collected information, pictures of limestone mountains, experimental instruments for the class. In class, teacher named some mountains having limestone of the country and mentioned advantages of limestone. To help pupils knowing about limestone’s nature, teacher rubbed limestone and pebble together, then poured a few vinegar drops onto the two stones while pupils were watching and predicted what would happen. Groups of pupils presented their initial conclusions and asked teacher questions. To answer questions, pupils conduct actual experiments so that they could compare with initial forecasts and then drew the conclusion: limestone is not so hard, and will bubble up with the effect of acid. The class was so lively, focused on activities of pupils with instructions of teacher. Pupils were excited about the class, which encouraged their faculty of thought, imagination, and train their practical skills. Pupil Nguyen Phuong Thi assessed: “We are very interested in this learning method, which helping us retaining knowledge faster but longer. Through teamwork, we strengthen our solidarity and can share learning experiences to each other”.According to Principal Nguyen Bao Trong, since 2012-2013 school year, Dinh Hoa primary school was chosen to implement “Hands-on” learning. This method is suitable to subjects of natural science. Two teachers were sent to attend training class held by Education – Training Ministry at Can Tho. In the first year, the school will apply this method to social natural subjects of 2nd and 3rd grade, and science subjects of 4th and 5th grade. Teachers implemented smoothly this new teacher method. Other teachers could also attend the class to learn about new method. Teacher Nguyen Thi Thanh Tuyen said, in addition to traditional teaching instruments, teachers also prepare miniatures, real things, pictures, maps, experimental instruments, modern equipment like computers, overhead projectors, CDs, scientific films etc. for these class. The combination between teaching and various instruments can create inspiration pupils while learning, improving pupil’s self-awareness of learning, knowledge acquiring process. Vice Principal Nguyen Thi Hoa said, while implementing Hands-on learning, pupils were excited about learning new knowledge. Learners discover themselves lessons; based on initial questions, they conduct experiments then come to conclusions, helping pupils mastering knowledge. After learning natural science and social subjects with this method, pupils can easily study other subjects by self-learning and researching.During this school year, Dinh Hoa primary school is applying extensively this method to all grades. Because of its advantages, other schools should also implement Hands-on learning. Teachers have to prepare more carefully for the class, but lessons will be more interesting and exciting.Reported by A. Sang – Translated by Ngoc Huynh
