A get-together was held in Hanoi on August 21 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Canada.
Addressing the function, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh appreciated Canada’s contribution to the end of the Vietnam War decades ago by twice joining an international committee on controlling and overseeing the 1954 Geneva Agreement and 1973 Paris Accord on peace restoration in Vietnam.He recalled high-level exchange visits by the two countries’ leaders, helping strengthen multifaceted cooperation, especially in economics, trade and investment.Since Vietnam and Canada signed a bilateral trade agreement in 1995, two-way trade has increased 20fold, reaching more than US$1.6 billion in 2012. Canada now ranks 15th among foreign investors in Vietnam.Vietnam and Canada are currently joining negotiations of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement – the largest free trade pact of its kind in Asia and the Pacific.Ninh thanked Canada for maintaining Vietnam in the list of its 20 ODA recipients, adding that Canadian-ODA funded projects in the fields of the environment, education, vocational training, and banking reform, have been implemented effectively, contributing to Vietnam’s socio-economic development.He also thanked the government and people of Canada for creating favourable conditions for Vietnamese expatriates to integrate well into the local community.He spoke highly of the role of people-to-people diplomacy, particularly of the Vietnam-Canada Friendship Association, in promoting bilateral relations.Ambassador Deborah Chatsis said Canada is increasing cooperation in education-training, as the number of Vietnamese students studying in Canada increased fourfold in 2011 compared to 2007.She noted that the Vietnamese community, now numbering 250,000, has made a significant contribution to Canada’s development and many of them have returned and engaged in building the nation.
