Implementing Framework Convention on Tobacco Control helps improve community health

Vietnam is among 170 membership nations of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) is the first treaty negotiated under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO). The treaty entered into force in 2005. It was signed by 170 WHO member states. This is one of conventions luring participation of many nations. The FCTC is also one of the most quickly ratified treaties in United Nations history. With more than 170 membership nations, the convention has affirmed everyone’s rights of enjoying best healthcare and set out new legitimate obligations for co-operation of tobacco control.

 

Harm of smoking.

The treaty's provisions include rules that govern the production, sale, distribution, advertisement, and taxation of tobacco, tobacco harm prevention, tobacco smuggling control…

In this year, more than 5 million people will die of diseases relating to tobacco. They include heart attack, stroke, cancer, and among others. The figure does not include of over 600,000 people to be died of secondhand smoking.  Till 2030, the number of the dead caused by smoking relating diseases will surge 8 million people per year.

In Binh Duong province, the number of smokers is increasing and of course, harms of tobacco will increase along. Doctor Pham Anh Tung, vice director of the local Center for Social Disease Prevention, said “aside from the biggest risk of lung cancer, smokers will face risks of heart attack, high blood pressure, decrease in quantity and quality of sperm in men and early menopause and osteomalacia in women…
