Update: 23-12-2011 | 00:00:00

Vietnam surprisingly defeated stronger Georgia 3-1 in the third round of the 2011 Women’s World Chess Team Championship (WWCT2011) in Mardin, Turkey, on December 21.

Grandmaster Hoang Thi Bao Tram (Elo 2341) trounced Lela Javakhishvili (Elo 2475) from the competition's current leader, Georgia.

Her teammate, Hoang Thi Nhu Y (Elo 2218), also outplayed Georgia's Nino Khurtsidze (Elo 2440) in another game.

Vietnamese international masters Nguyen Thi Mai Hung (elo 2244) and Pham Le Thao Nguyen (Elo 2341) ended a sad day for Georgian opponents, holding Dzagnidze (Elo 2516) and Bela Khotenashvili (elo 2497) to a draw.

The championship’s official website says that December 21 was a “black day” for powerful teams, adding that Vietnamese girls’ victory over their Georgian opponents shocked the competition.

As a result of these glorious wins, Vietnam has earned four points after three rounds, and ranks among the top five in the tournament.

In the fourth round, the Vietnamese team will meet Chinese players, who are considered the top candidates for this year’s championship title.
