Industrial production rises 5.8% in April

The index of industrial production (IIP) in April rose 5.8% year on year, the General Statistics Office (GSO) said on April 26 in a posting on its website.A breakdown of sub-sectors showed mining increased 1%, manufacturing was up 6.9%, power generation and distribution rose 9.2% while water supply and waste processing gained 9.7%.During the first four months of 2013, industry grew by an average 5% compared with the same period last year, down from the 5.9% expansion in 2012.Manufacturing made the biggest gain during the January-April period, contributing 3.9 percentage points to the overall 5% growth.During the four months ending April, the IIP in Vinh Phuc surged 15.1% and Binh Duong gained 8.6% while industrial production in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City rose at a slower pace at 4.7% and 3.9% respectively.According to the GSO, hiring by the industrial sector in April rose 0.92% from the previous month and 0.1% from a year earlier.Hiring by the State-owned and foreign-invested enterprises went up by 0.4% and 2.5% respectively while that of private businesses fell 3.8%.Nhan Dan Online
