Update: 26-05-2011 | 00:00:00

Last time, the management of public order and safety of inland waterway transport (IWT) in the province were concerned by the sectors and authority levels while public awareness of law observance is highly improved. However, there are still some limitations, the subjective matters which lead to unfortunate waterway traffic accidents.

So as to prevent accidents and ensure the strict law implementation in terms of IWT, Provincial People's Committee (PPC) Chairman has issued a directive asking the departments and people's committees of districts and towns to demand the local police force to strengthen the inspection of inland waterway vehicles, cross-river passenger ports, the resolute and strict handling of overloaded vehicles, unlicensed inland wharves , cross-river passenger ports, and unqualified drivers who have not been duly granted with certificate, professional qualification.

In the meantime, propagation and dissemination to raise up awareness of people about the IWT law should be intensified; guidance for administrative registration and inland waterway passenger ports operation permit granting procedures should be favorably advocated and extended to owners of vehicles.

As for sinking incident of Din Ky tourist cruise ship (in Binh Nham Commune, Thuan An Town) on May 20, killing 16 people, Din Ky private business establishment is required to discontinued its operation of all cruise ships and to coordinate with Thuan An Town People's Committee, Inland Waterway Port Authority in region No. 3 and concerned branches in organizing the inspection, enforcement to remove restaurant ships on Saigon River which are disqualified to ensure technical requirements and regulations of IWT law.
