An international seminar on the sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos was held in the central city of Quang Ngai on April 27.
The event was attended by more than 50 delegates including international scholars, overseas Vietnamese and leading experts from universities and research institutes in the US, Russia, Sweden, Australia, India, the Republic of Korea and the Philippines.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Associate.Professor,Dr Pham Dang Phuoc from Pham Van Dong University said that the ongoing situation in the East Sea is very complex, and further complicated by China’s establishment of the so-called “Shansa City”.
This seminar aims to clarify the legal and historical foundation of Vietnam’s sovereignty over the two archipelagos and discuss ways to settle disputes and promote peace, stability and cooperation in the East Sea area.
The seminar also focused on international laws on historical sovereignty and the disputes over the islands, as well as legal and historical evidence affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over the two archipelagos, ways to resolve differences peacefully, and other current issues related to the East Sea.
