Journalists need to raise their political stance and professional ethics

Friday, 13/08/2010

Journalists need to expand their knowledge, create a broader social consensus and encourage people from all walks of life to engage actively in bringing the Doi Moi (Renewal) process to success.

This was stated by Nguyen Phu Trong, Chairman of the National Assembly at the ninth congress of the Vietnam Journalists’ Association (VJA) which opened in Hanoi on August 12.

The event was attended by 403 delegates representing the 17,763 members of the VJA.

In his opening speech, Dinh The Huynh, VJA Chairman highlighted efforts to implement resolutions on ideological, theoretical and journalistic work since the 8th VJA congress and the 10th National Party Congress and the Party Central Committee’s Instruction No 37 on increasing the operational quality and efficiency of VJA chapters in localities.

The delegates then elected qualified journalists to the VJA’s Executive Committee for the 2010-2015 term.

VJA Vice Chairman Le Quoc Trung said that over the past few years, remarkable progress has been made in the Association’s operations. Mr Trung praised journalists’ contributions to disseminating Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh’s Thoughts and Party and State policies and guidelines and to refuting misinformation and erroneous allegations and seditious schemes to undermine people’s confidence in the Doi Moi process.

The delegates pointed out weaknesses and pending issues from the previous term and devised seven key tasks for the new term.

NA leader Trong praised the Association’s achievements in the previous term and called on all Association members to uphold their patriotic tradition and take advantage of creativity and brainpower to fulfill all their set targets.

The Party and State always supports the creative efforts of journalists to contribute to Vietnam’s development, he said.

As the voice of the Party, the State, socio-political organisations, and the public, journalists need to encourage national unity and public involvement in the renewal process and in national industrialisation and modernisation so that Vietnam can achieve its goal of becoming a strong country with prosperous citizens living in a just, democratic, and civilised society, Mr Trong emphasised.

It is essential for journalists to provide true and objective information and their dissemination of information must be accurate, timely and interesting to properly raise public awareness of Party and State policies and guidelines, Mr Trong added.

After electing the VJA Executive Committee for the 2010-2015 term, the delegates passed several VJA regulations and resolutions.
