Update: 20-11-2012 | 00:00:00

Many National Assembly deputies agreed but many people said that the city should get people's opinions about this. According to the explanation of the Government on the Law of the Capital, the symbol of the capital city is the typical image that is associated with the history and culture of Hanoi and the Vietnamese people; expresses the aspirations, the pride of Hanoi people and Vietnamese people about a capital of culture, civilization and modernization. In the process of drafting this law, the majority opinion suggested selecting Khue Van Cac - the traditional symbol of the eagerness for learning of Hanoi people and Vietnamese people as a whole. Deputy Nguyen Ngoc Bao said that Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam deserves to be Hanoi’s symbol because this place, which was built in 1070 as the first university of Vietnam, with over 700 years of operation, trained thousands of talents for the country. According to the ancestors, Khue Van Cac means the concentration of essence between earth and heaven and it aims to promote education of Confucianism culture of Vietnam. However, deputy Phung Duc Tien said that Vietnamese people and international friends have known many places, items and symbols of Hanoi such as the Hoan Kiem Lake, the One Pillar Pagoda, Vam Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam, the Hanoi flagpole, Co Loa Citadel and the West Lake. Therefore, the selection of Khue Van Cac a symbol of Hanoi should be considered more carefully. Deputy Tran Ngoc Vinh commented that the drafting committee needs to clarify the criteria on history, culture, fine arts to choose Khue Van Cac as the symbol of the capital city. He suggested the Hanoi authorities consulting the people and experts on the selection of the symbol of the capital city through polls with specific criteria to ensure the accuracy and objectivity. Deputy Pham Tat Thang also said that Hanoi should consult widely on this issue, if not at least to the people's representatives, meaning the National Assembly deputies. Hanoi held a contest in 1997 on the occasion of the preparation of the 990th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi and has chosen this symbol. It is expected that the Law on the Capital City will be considered and approved by the National Assembly on November 21.
