Update: 07-09-2011 | 00:00:00

Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem, ranked No. 25 in the world, was defeated by Cuban rival Lazaro Bruzon Batista in a tie-breaker in the third round of the 2011 World Chess Cup.

At the ongoing event in Russia, Liem (ELO 2715) and Batista (ELO 2673) drew both their matches so they entered a two-game tie-breaker. Liem lost the first game despite having the right to go first, and the two players shared the same number of points in the second game.

Though Liem did not qualify for the next round, he achieved significant results at the world’s biggest chess competition. In his two previous similar events, Liem only finished the first round.

At present, Bu Xiangzhi of China is the only player from the Asia-Pacific to gain entrance into the fourth round of the competition.
