More IT backing sought from US

Update: 14-05-2010 | 00:00:00

Representatives from Viet Nam and the US agreed yesterday, May 12, to boost co-operation on information and communication technology (ICT).

The commitment was made at the US-Viet Nam ICT Commercial Dialogue Working Group meeting, which ended yesterday, May 12, in the capital. The annual event was organised jointly by Viet Nam’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) and the American Chamber of Commerce in Ha Noi.

"Co-operation between Viet Nam and the US in the ICT sector has witnessed encouraging results in the past several years, making an effective contribution to enhancing bilateral ties between the two countries," said deputy minister Nguyen Minh Hong,

Nguyen Thanh Tuyen, deputy director of MIC’s Department of Information Technology, said the annual event was a good opportunity for enterprises from the two countries to boost co-operation.

"The Vietnamese Government always supports co-operation in the ICT industry to boost partnerships, joint-ventures and other forms of co-operation," he said.

Nguyen Long, general secretary of the Viet Nam Association for Information Processing, said there was a lack of understanding of US law among Vietnamese firms. He also said there was also a lack of demand among US enterprises for Vietnamese IT services.

Both of these were major challenges facing the Vietnamese ICT businesses, he said.

He called for the launch of an e-portal, which would help Vietnamese and US ICT businesses exchange information about business opportunities in each country.

Those attending the meeting said that Viet Nam’s ICT industry had grown rapidly over the past few years but that it lacked infrastructure, network security and IT skills and training.

Launched in 2007, the US-Viet Nam ICT Commercial Dialogue focused on capacity-building efforts in key areas, said Cora Dickson from the International Trade Administration.
