Myanmar and Vietnam will strengthen bilateral trade and investment cooperation to raise their trade value to US$500 million in 2015.
The agreement was reached during talks in Hanoi on March 20 between Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan and her visiting Myanmar counterpart Nyan Tun.
To achieve the goal, the two countries will increase visit exchanges at all levels and maintain the existing cooperation mechanism, including regular meetings of the Vietnam-Myanmar Joint Committee and Joint Sub-Committee on Trade, as well as political consultations.
Accordingly, they will coordinate closely to successfully organise the 8th meeting of the Joint Committee on Trade in Myanmar this month.
The two countries will also further their cooperation in national defence-security, agro-forestry, aquaculture, livestock breeding, finance-banking, telecommunications, transportation, oil & gas, and tourism.
Vice President Doan proposed that the Myanmar government speed up the licensing process for Vietnamese businesses investing in the country, and facilitate their operations there.
She congratulated Myanmar on its marked achievements in national construction and defence, which she said will lay a firm foundation for the country to develop strongly in the future.
She expressed hope that Myanmar will successfully assume its ASEAN Chairmanship role in 2014 to raise its profile regionally and globally.
For his part, Nyan Tun spoke highly of Vietnam’s increasing status globally and believed that Vietnamese people will continue to reap greater successes in their ongoing Doi Moi (Renewal) process.
Both host and guest confirmed the two countries will coordinate closely together at regional and international forums, especially within the framework of the United Nations and ASEAN, as well as other regional cooperation mechanisms such as the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), the East-West Economic Cooperation (EWEC), and the Ayeyawadi-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS).
VP Nyan Tun appreciated Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2014 and hoped Vietnam will share its experience in hosting international sport events.
Myanmar will host the 27th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) later this year.
The two leaders underlined the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of maritime in the East Sea, and settling sea-related disputes through peaceful means according to international law.
Nyan Tun invited Madame Doan to visit Myanmar, and the invitation was accepted with pleasure.
The same day, VP Nyan Tun was received by State President Truong Tan Sang. He also visited the headquarters of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), the Association of Vietnamese Investors in Myanmar (AVIM), the Military-run Telecom Group (Viettel). He met with representatives of leading Vietnamese businesses.
The Vice President of Myanmar began an official four-day visit to Vietnam on March 19 at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Thi Doan.
