Northern region braces for impact of cold spell

The north of the country is forecast to experience a cold snap from December 27 with temperatures in some areas dropping to 10 degrees Celsius, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

Moreover, forecasters have stated that as typhoon Phanfone moves into the East Sea, it is unlikely to hit the country’s mainland and will quickly weaken as a result of meeting cold air from China.

Despite this, there are strong winds and rough seas in the East Sea area as a result of the impact of typhoon Phanfone, with sea waves expected to be between six metres and eight metres high.

In addition, strong winds and rough seas are forecast to hit the Gulf of Tonkin and the East Sea area from December 26. This includes the waters of the Hoang Sa archipelago, also known as the Paracel islands, due to the effects of the northeast monsoon.

There will be a cold spell hitting the nation’s northern and central regions from December 30- 31.

From December 31 to January 3, 2020, there is widespread rain throughout provinces from Ha Tinh to Phu Yen, Dr. Lam noted.
