Overcoming deficiencies to improve effectiveness of urban agricultural development

Update: 18-06-2013 | 00:00:00
Urban agriculture has been developing positively because of supporting policies from authorities. The model of ornamental fish growing brings high income to Mr. Vo Hieu Trung at An Son commune, Thuan An town  An inevitable trendApart from the fast growing of industrialization, agriculture is also focused that construction of urban agriculture models is a necessary progress. Additionally, farmers always learn and apply new technologies to farming. Clean agricultural products as well as high-tech farming meets difficult requirements of the market. One typical example of urban agricultural development is the model of vegetables having low time growing but high yield crops. Successful models are at Uyen Hung town (Tan Uyen district), Tan Dinh commune (Ben Cat district) or An Thanh and Binh Chuan quarter (Thuan An town), of which outputs are supplied to supermarkets so that it can improve farmers’ income and notably producing knowledge. Farmer clubs were established for member to help each other. Principal of safe vegetables producing club at Tan Dinh commune Mr. Nguyen Van Dau said: “Members were trained, attended workshops, visited real models to enhance producing competence. They can now: use composted manure, biological products, agricultural mulch, net, insect traps, write farming diary…, which can reduce production costs.Besides, in districts and TDM City there are also successful models such as growing of orchid, bonsai, ornamental fish, hydroponic plant, etc. with new applied technologies like new varieties, automatic watering system…Deputy director of Agriculture & Rural Development Department Mr. Pham Van Bong said: “Agricultural sector has directed functional agencies to launch development of urban agriculture. Training courses have been organized for farming clubs of all levels, farmers have been simultaneously instructed to build up high-tech agricultural models”.Overcoming deficienciesAs a new breakthrough program, there are still deficiencies, which are mainly small and dispersed models because of the lack of planed areas for production from localities. These have limited increase of brand name reputation and product consuming. Some transferring models invested by budget capital have not been implemented yet, because the State budget does not sponsor directly farming households. Thus agricultural transfer is still ineffective. Applying of new high technologies requires high start-up capital so that products have weak competitive advantages, cannot be exported…If we can remedy these shortcomings and then cooperate with other agricultural programs like high-tech agriculture, new rural development, Binh Duong province can create powerful changes to agricultural production.
