Portuguese Parliament leader vows to support Vietnam-EU ties

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung had a meeting on June 3 in Lisbon with President of the Portuguese Parliament Maria da Assunsao who affirmed that the Portugal’s legislative body supports Vietnam in fostering ties with the European Union.  

She pledged that her country’s parliament will work for the European Parliament’s approval of the framework Partnership and Comprehensive Cooperation Agreement between Vietnam and the EU.

Portugal also supports the early conclusion of negotiations for a free trade agreement between the two sides as well as the EU’s recognition of Vietnam ’s market economy at the time of ending negotiations. 

This will also create favourable conditions for Vietnam and Portugal to strengthen economic, trade and investment ties, she said. 

The Portuguese top legislator also affirmed that the Portuguese Parliament will continue backing the expansion of partnership between Vietnam and Portugal in all fields, while standing ready to act as bridge for both sides to boost economic, trade and investment collaboration as well as cultural exchanges, people-to-people contacts and mutual understanding. 

She also spoke highly of the success of the 132nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentarian Union hosted by Vietnam in March this year. 

On his part, PM Nguyen Tan Dung briefed his host on the outcomes of his talks with his counterpart Pedro Passos Coelho. 

He highly valued the Portuguese Parliament’s participation and active contributions to the 132nd IPU Assembly. The Government leader thanked the Portuguese Parliament’s strong support to the development of relations between the two countries as well as the growth of comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and the EU. 

Both host and guest expressed hope that cooperation between the two parliaments and two countries will be further bolstered in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks. 

They shared the support of the maintenance of peace, stability, security and safety of maritime and aviation in regions and all over the world, as well as the strengthening of dialogues and creating favourable conditions for cooperation and common prosperity.
