Power generated from wastes

Wednesday, 16/11/2022

The project of a waste plant with a waste incineration technology line to recover energy of Binh Duong Water - Environment Joint Stock Company (Biwase) is currently in the sprint stage to install a test-run turbine with a capacity of 5MW. The project promises to achieve "double benefits" by bringing economic value as well as making a positive contribution to environmental protection for the sake of sustainable development that Binh Duong sets out.

Power generation turbine is considered the heart of the power plant as invested in modern and advanced technology by Siemens Corporation of Germany

VND 300 billion power plant

One day in early November 2022, we were present at the construction site of the garbage factory where dozens of workers and engineers of the Binh Duong Waste Treatment Branch of Biwase were still working hard sprint for the final stages to prepare to install the generator set to take advantage of the heat sources from the waste incinerator at the branch. The complex of generators with a dense system of heat and gas pipes to run turbines invested with technology from Europe shows Biwase's determination to the commitments in its business strategy by bringing efficiency but not forgetting the responsibility to the community, especially environmental protection.

Taking us on a tour at the construction site, and pointing in the direction of the workers working, engineer Nguyen Van Bac, who is directly in charge of the construction site, shared that the company is determined to operate the electricity capacity of 5MW this December. In order to put into operation as planned, in the past months, more than 40 engineers and workers of Biwase have worked around the clock on the construction site, which is not only the determination of the company's leadership, but also the expectation of investors about the new prospects in Biwase's business strategy to bring continuously added values.

Sharing more about Biwase's second power plant technology, Ngo Chi Thang - Deputy Director of Binh Duong Waste Treatment Branch, said that the investment in the plant has been approved by the Board of Directors. Shareholders and investors trust and agree because the benefits bring not only economic value but also associated with environmental protection responsibility. It is considered a throughout mission to bring harmony between economic benefits and common interests to the community.

“The design of the power plant is done by Biwase's engineering team through learning from many countries around the world. In particular, equipment, machinery and turbines are all equipped with modern and advanced technologies from Europe, ensuring a stable capacity of 5MW/h and will be generated to the national grid. Currently, the waste burning part has completed, taking advantage of the heat source to convert to a heat generator generating steam under high pressure to run turbines to generate electricity. The total investment value for the project of a waste incineration plant to recover energy for electricity production is VND 300 billion," said Thang.

In its development strategy, Biwase's goal is to invest in works of high quality and bring long-term benefits. Therefore, the project continues to be designed by Biwase with the participation of leading experienced units and consultants in the field. Along with that, the technology and equipment are all imported from Europe. Particularly, the incinerator is installed with an automatic emission monitoring system invested with British technology and connected 24/7 in real time with the provincial Environmental Monitoring Center for monitoring.

“Biwase's orientation in the coming time is to become a complete complex. We are also on the path to achieving that, waste is recovered and recycled to the maximum and then thoroughly treated. All of waste is sorted, recycled, and produced in useful and environmentally friendly products. Thereby, investors in all fields come to Binh Duong to trust the ability to handle waste during the operation process," said Ngo Chi Thang.

Biwase is focusing on accelerating the progress to put the factory into operation in December 2022 as planned

Dual benefits

At meetings with investors, Nguyen Van Thien - Chairman of Biwase's Board of Directors, convinced shareholders and investors of the strategic vision of sustainable development, which is to create a harmony between economic benefits and the goal of environmental protection hand in hand.

Currently, it is estimated that the province has more than 2,200 tons of domestic waste every day, which is forecasted to increase annually by about 10%. In 2017, the project to build the first Biwase power plant to take advantage of methane from a temporary landfill at the complex was started, based on European technology. The units and equipment are mainly imported from Germany, making the power plant worth VND 70 billion or about 3 million US dollars with a modern, synchronously designed system that can be tested, manipulated and controlled remotely. The intelligent system to control the gas source for collection, separate water and impurities from the collected gas, which has been invested in modern, and all according to European technology, ensuring the fuel supply to run the generators for a capacity of 2,320kW. Power output is effective in production activities because the power source serves all activities at the branch, especially for the company's composting production with a capacity of 1,680 tons a day to save tens of billions of VND for Binh Duong Waste Treatment Branch.

“With the second power plant project, Biwase's 5MW capacity will take advantage of heat from a waste incinerator with a capacity of 200 tons/day. The heat source from the incinerator will not only bring added value to Biwase's production and business activities, but is the goal of the company's sustainable development strategy in the future. Nguyen Van Thien - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Biwase shared at the meeting with investors.

Over the years, as a typical enterprise in the field of environment, in which the effective use of ODA capital, Biwase has been highly appreciated by the government, ministries, central branches and donors. In the context that the electricity supply in the northern region of the province, especially in the area of Ben Cat town, is increasing at present, Biwase's power production project promises to contribute positively to supplementing the power source in the area, and at the same time more meaningful in environmental protection work. It can be said that, after the success of the biogas power plant, the project to take advantage of the heat from the non-recyclable waste incinerator continues to become a highlight, which is expected to bring double benefits in production and business activities while bringing benefits to the community in the cause of environmental protection that Binh Duong province has set out in the goal of sustainable development.
