Update: 23-01-2010 | 00:00:00

Vietnam’s rice output in 2009 hit 39 million tonnes, it was announced at a conference held on January 22 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in coordination with the Can Tho municipal People’s Committee.

The purpose of the conference was to review last year’s rice production and outline a plan for this year

The Mekong River Delta and southeastern region contributed 22.6 million tonnes. Exports totaled over 6 million tonnes and earned US$2.7 billion, a new record.

In 2009, despite difficult circumstances including plant epidemics and climate change, rice output and exports maintained a significant growth rate.

This year, rice production is expected to face many additional challenges. Consequently, the Mekong River Delta and southeastern region need to find a way to continue increasing productivity and quality.

At the conference, delegates agreed on new technology to deploy in 2010 to ensure national food security.
