Special forum boosts Vietnam-Japan education

A special Vietnam-Japan education forum has been held in Tokyo to mark the 40th anniversary of the two nations’ diplomatic ties. Addressing the forum, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan said Vietnamese-Japanese relations have developed remarkably. Japan is Vietnam’s largest international donor and investor.At last count, Japan had invested in 1,900 Vietnamese projects, capitalised at nearly US$32 billion and employing a huge array of human resources.Deputy PM Nhan said the Vietnamese Government has decided to introduce Japanese language into secondary schools and will cooperate with Japan to improve Vietnamese tertiary education.Vietnamese campuses of Japanese universities are planned in an effort to produce better qualified human resources.The number of Vietnamese students, postgraduates and trainees sent to Japan for vocational training has dramatically increased.Both nations have also cooperated in fields ranging from advanced technology, research to space exploration and nuclear power.Vietnam has also introduced a cooperative model incorporating Japanese agencies into the country’s education and training institutions and state-owned enterprises.Deputy PM Nhan believes education and training cooperation between Vietnam and Japan has the potential to consolidate the two nations’ strategic partnership.On behalf of the Japanese Government, Japan’s Deputy Education, Culture, Tourism, Sports, and Science and Technology Minister Teru Fukui presented a new education strategy that includes a focus on foreign students.He said Japan actively promotes cooperation with Vietnam through the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) varied projects.In a report delivered at the forum, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Tran Quang Quy stressed the emphasis education and training cooperation and human resources development have received in the Japanese-Vietnamese strategic partnership.Quy also acknowledged Japan as one of the Vietnamese education sector’s largest providers of official development assistance.Quy admitted that despite the increasing number of Vietnamese students in Japan, cooperation between the two nations has yet to reflect the entirety of their potential. Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training wants to rectify this through ongoing projects in future.Vietnamese and Japanese representatives also presented the forum with reports discussing measures to expand bilateral cooperation in education, training, science and technology, and the development of human resources.VOV
