Sugary drinks may raise risk of high blood pressure

Update: 04-03-2011 | 00:00:00

Scientists found consuming too many sugary drinks may raise the risk of high blood pressure, according to a study published in "Hypertension" on Monday.

The researchers analyzed the diet diaries, urine samples and blood pressure records over a four-day period of 2,700 American and British men and women between 40 and 59.

The study suggested a stronger link between sugary drinks and high blood pressure than researchers previously expected.

Every extra can of sugary drink intake per day will heighten the blood pressure, in average, by a significant 1.6mmHg and 0.8mmHg in systolic and diastolic reading, according to a further calculation.

The study also found people who consumed too much sugary drinks in long-term will intake much more calories than acturally need, which always results in overweight.

It is widely known that too much salt in the diet can increase the high blood pressure risk, and now people also need to be careful with sugar, said Professor Paul Elliott, senior author of the study, from the School of Public Health at Imperial College London.

Scientists advised to choose the heart-healthy alternatives such as water or unsweetened teas to get rid of the "harmful" sugary drinks.

High blood pressure has long been considered a major factor for high risks in heart attack and stroke. (Agencies)
