Taiwanese guava – humble investment, huge yield

Thursday, 12/12/2013
Farmers in Tru Van Tho Commune of Ben Cat District are diverted to planting Taiwanese guava as household economic development model. With stable harvest and price, the market share for those farmers is expanding. Mrs. Be is over-joy for good yield of guava this year Thus, Taiwanese guava planting has been considered as a pivotal program contributing to new rural area construction, poverty eradication and enriching local farmers.Over 10 ha of Tru Van Tho Commune have been chosen for planting Taiwanese guava. As the pioneer in planting Taiwanese guava since 2011, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Be invested to 2,000 m2 for her 200 transplanted guavas. In 8 months, she harvested the first crop. On daily basis, she could harvest 200 to 300kg to sell at VND 13,000 to 17,000 per kg. Rough calculation of her income surpassed the possible income from rubber trees, longans or durians. Then, she transplanted to additional 6,000 square meters. As Be informed, she failed to earn much from other fruits including longans, jackfruit, and durian, etc.Seeing other farmers in Mekong Delta earn much from Taiwanese guavas which she had taken to her farm replacing the older ones. With her experience in farming, she applied various new technologies to planting guavas to settle down family income. She became a model for local farmers to follow. They have asked her to transplant the seedlings.Meanwhile, Department of Science and Technology and Tru Van Tho Commune Association of Farmers have coordinated with Viet Phuong Co. Ltd., a specialized seedling provider in Ben Van of Lai Hung Commune of Ben Cat District, to open courses introducing model of guava planting and caring, harvesting and selling coverage.Accordingly, local people of the commune have switched to guava planting to replace other models. Currently, the commune has over 10 hectares of guavas. Mrs. Tran Thi Thuy said: “This is all-year-round tree with short-span growing term. The trees are strong against pest while the fruit contains up to 74% of meat with lower seeds.”As a guava fruit is about 5cm round, it should be wrapped up in nylon bags for two months to be protected from pests before harvesting.Averagely, 600 to 700 guava trees can be planted on 1 hectare land lot with 3 by 5 meter distance. A Taiwanese guava tree may yield 60-70kg a year with VND 250 to 300 million per hectare a year. A cycle of 5-day harvest a week may yield averagely 3 tons of guavas.Mr. Phan Thanh Minh, Chair of Tru Van Tho Commune Association of Farmers said: “Local association of farmers has established cooperative group of Taiwanese guavas to support local farmers in planting guavas.” For the time to come, the association was projected to more training courses to encourage farmers to plant guavas and sustainably escape poverty. The seedlings supplied by Viet Phuong Co. Ltd. at bargaining price of VND 26,000 a seedling tree. The local association has connected with fertilizer and pesticide corporations in Ben Cat District to support farmers with installment purchase.Besides, Viet Phuong Co. Ltd. was committed to guarantee selling of guavas from the farmers.Reported by Thien Ly – Translated by Vi bao
