Update: 07-05-2013 | 00:00:00

As visiting 76-year-old Ms. Mai Thi Ut at 4th hamlet, Lac An commune, Tan Uyen district, we were surprised at her small, low-roofed house with 3 daughters, who have to make their living so that they have bypassed having their own families.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong, who is 50 year olds and has an epileptic illness, related that her father passed away as she was a child, her mother continued her widowhood and brought up her children. As 50, her mother started to be forgetful and paralyzed at arms and legs so that she could not walk. Ms. Hong had to work and do knitting at the same time to feed her mother and sisters. The epilepsy mistreated her as 20 year old. Due to poverty she could not treat completely this illness. Thus since later 10 years, she cannot work, arms and legs constantly tremble, her body is exhausting and has epilepsy fits.

Because Ms. Hong is sick, Ms. 48-year-old Nguyen Thi Thu has to daily go to Uyen Hung town and buy vegetables for selling at Lac An. She also has to do knitting for earn more money. Many time has elapsed, she forgets to have her own family. 2 years ago, as she was on her way to Uyen Hung to buy her mother medicines, an traffic accident happened with her. The culprit ran away, she had a trauma in the head, and then came a heart disease. “I have never thought of a such difficult life. I’m upset not because the poverty but because becoming a burden to my family”, Ms. Thu confided.

Every day the youngest sister Ms. Nguyen Thi Suong, who is 43 year olds and mentally deficient, has to take care and cooking for her mother and sisters. She said, “Caring for 3 sick people is really exhausting. I have never had a good sleep at night because of watching my sisters. When they have an illness attack, I have to make them lemon juice, and give medicines. On recent days, they have often have fits, so I’m longing for sleeping”.

As moving from Nha Be (Ho Chi Minh City) to Lac An, Ms. Ut was provided 1,000 sqm. of land. Her family sold this land to treat 3 ill persons. Now they live on governmental allowance VND680,000 per month, which has been never enough for 4 people. Every day they expect on supports of neighbors to survive.

Chairman of Lac An’s People Committee Mr. Phan Van Quang informed that Ms. Ut is the most difficult family of this commune; he has mobilized many sources for money, essential commodities to help Ms. Ut. However, supporting from people within the commune is not sufficient; therefore, reliefs from other sponsors are welcomed and expected.
