Update: 23-05-2014 | 00:00:00

Thuan An town has concentrated on building irrigational works with the goal of combatting flooding and high tide, contributing to serving the local urbanization development and production process.

Real situation

Thuan An town lies along the Saigon river with the lowest areas belonging to An Son commune and Hung Dinh, Binh Nham, Lai Thieu, An Thanh, Vinh Phu wards. The town’s main irrigational works include Song Than-Dong An, Chom Sao-Suoi Don, Bung Biep-Suoi Cat together with An Son-Lai Thieu intra-field irrigational system invested in accordance with the province’s irrigational plan.

Invested by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development with a total length of 13km, the An Son-Lai Thieu dike system has so far upheld its effectiveness of preventing the rise of the tide and flooding for a total area of 2,690 hectares. There are also more than 200 canals and ditches with a total length of more than 90km, mostly in communes and wards along the Saigon river.

Since 2014, Thuan An town has dredged, upgraded and cleared more than 223 works of 98.8km with a total investment capital of VND64.4bln, contributing to preventing the local rising of the tide and flooding.

However, some areas like Binh Nham, Hung Dinh, An Thanh and Vinh Phu, have still faced the partial flooding situation, due to high tide at year end, affecting the local people’s daily life and production. One of main reasons leading to this situation was that some dikes were downgraded. Meanwhile, the investment of projects has not been implemented in a synchronous way yet, affecting the local flood and storm control…

Putting focus on irrigational works

This year’s rainy reason is approaching. Thuan An town has also made plans on building irrigational works and upgrading some dikes of canals and ditches.

Huynh Van Giao, a staff of the town’s Division of Economics, who is in charge of irrigation-flood and storm control said: “To combat flooding, due to high tide and natural disaster, since early this year, Thuan An town has carried out 6 works from capital for the irrigational cause with a total value implemented reaching VND2.8bln and 3 others from capital for the flood and storm control with VND140mln. The town has also finished the settlement of 4 transition works from 2013 with a total value of VND1.3bln”.

Also according to Mr.Giao, some irrigational works of dredging Vam Bung ditch in An Thanh ward; upgrading Cau Nho ditch in Hung Dinh ward; dredging Vam Ba Tha ditch in Vinh Phu ward are underway from capital for the irrigational cause…So far, the construction of the work of dredging Ba Tha ditch has reached 30% of total volume. Three flood and storm control works, comprising Bong ditch in An Son commune, Hai Bieu ditch in Hung Dinh ward and Cay Xang in Vinh Phu ward, have been completed with a total value of VND140mln.

Thuan An town now boosts construction of the local irrigational works to combat flooding during the rainy season. Once completed, they will help ensure the local water drainage during the rainy season and water supply for the local people’s demand for agricultural production, contributing to promoting the local socio-economic development.
