Update: 30-08-2024 | 12:14:53

The success of the August Revolution and the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam opened a new era in the nation's history - the era of independence, freedom, and the working people being the masters of the country. Under the leadership of the Party, our people have gone from victory to victory, creating heroic and glorious historic pages.

Build a career and strengthen potential

The achievements made over the past 79 years, particularly in the nearly 40 years of implementing national renovation, can be traced back to the great victory of the August Revolution and the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. These achievements stem from applying lessons learned and the strong promotion of the offensive spirit of the August Revolution in 1945. For nearly 40 years, the country has carried out the renovation process. The spirit of the August Revolution has always been a great source of motivation, fostering the determination and efforts of our entire Party and people.

Under the leadership of the Party, the country's renovation process over the past 40 years has achieved great achievements of historical significance, contributing to "Our country has never had the foundation, potential, position and international prestige as it does today". From a country with a poor and backward agricultural economy with 90% of the population working in agriculture, Vietnam has built a material and technical base and socio-economic infrastructure to gradually meet the needs of industrialization, modernization and international integration, creating a favorable environment to attract domestic and foreign resources, strongly promoting the process of industrialization, modernization, socio-economic development, and constantly improving people's lives.

From a country with chronic food shortages, after nearly 40 years of national renewal, Vietnam has not only ensured food security but also become a leading exporter of rice and many other agricultural products in the world. Industry has rapidly developed; the proportion of industry and services has continuously increased and now represents about 85% of GDP.

Our national economy ranks 5th in the ASEAN region and 35th among the 40 largest economies in the world. Vietnam has become the 22nd largest global trading partner. It can be seen that, from a poor and backward country, the scale of our economy has been constantly expanding; GDP in 2023 reached about US$430 billion. In the 1990s, the GDP per capita in our country was below 100 USD, whereas in 2023, the GDP per capita was 4,300 USD. Vietnam left the group of low-income countries in 2008 and is aiming to become an upper-middle-income country by 2030. In 1990, exports were less than 1 billion USD, but now Vietnam has exported 355 billion USD, with a trade surplus reaching 28 billion USD... Those figures indicate that the country's economy has significantly strengthened in potential and scale.

Enhance reputation and position

Since the beginning of the promotion of national renovation, our country's economy has experienced continuous and relatively high growth over the past almost 40 years, with an average growth rate of nearly 7% per year. Vietnam is considered one of the leading countries in realizing the United Nations millennium goals.

Meanwhile, renovation, industrialization, and modernization have helped the country escape the socio-economic crisis in the 1980s and continuously improve people's lives. The average poverty rate decreased by about 1.5% per year; from 58% according to the old 1993 Government standard to 2.93% according to the multidimensional poverty standard (higher criteria than before) in 2023.

The Party and State have always focused on combining economic and socio-cultural development to achieve social progress and equity, as specified in each development policy. This has helped develop culture and society, improve people's material and spiritual life, and improve living standards and quality of life...

In terms of foreign affairs, from a country under siege and embargo, Vietnam has now expanded and deepened international relations. Diplomatic relations are constantly expanded and deepened. Vietnam currently maintains diplomatic relations with 193 countries worldwide, including strategic and comprehensive partnerships with 30 of them. The country also has economic relations with more than 230 countries and territories and has signed 16 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), including several new-generation FTAs. Besides successfully hosting major international events such as ASEAN and APEC, Vietnam has fulfilled important international responsibilities within organizations like the United Nations Security Council, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and UNESCO.

This shows that Vietnam's position and prestige in the international arena are very high; at the same time, it demonstrates the viewpoint that "Vietnam is a friend, a reliable partner and an active, responsible member of the international community" that our Party has affirmed...

Over the past 79 years, the spirit of the August Revolution 1945 has always been a source of great motivation and strength for the Vietnamese people in the new era; encouraging the entire Party, army and people to resolutely carry out and firmly protect the achievements of the renovation cause, steadfastly pursue the goal of socialism, and build and develop a prosperous and happy country.
