UN Secretary-General António Guterres begins Vietnam visit

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Hanoi on October 21 for a two-day visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

This is an important visit by the UN leader as he described head of the trip, demonstrating his desire to promote the Vietnam - United Nations partnership that has existed over the past 45 years.

The visit also indicates that Vietnam is one of the indispensable members of the United Nations that has been making practical contributions to the common affairs of the United Nations in addressing global challenges, for peace and development throughout the globe.

The visit is also taking place at a time after Vietnam successfully completed its role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2020-2021 term. The country was recently elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term.

During his stay in Hanoi, Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to hold talks with President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and meet with other senior Vietnamese leaders, including Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.

He will co-chair the 45th anniversary of the Vietnam – UN partnership, and take part in a number of other activities.
